The "H" pipe takes advantage of the low pressure pulses in the dual exhause. Engines with more than one bank of cylinders (V6,V8,e.t.c)have offset low pressure pulses in each of the dual pipes. You have to tie the dual pipes together w/ the H pipe at a spot on the pipes where each has a low pressure zone. If you measures the temperature of an exh. pipe thru its length you would find that as you move toward the exit of the pipe the temperature varies from hot to cooler, hot, cooler all the way back. Finding a cooler spot on each dual is where the H would connect the two. Then you have suceeded in improving the "scavaging" or tuning the exhaust. The dual exh. length is important to for tuning. It will help torque if done properly. If done wrong it will hurt your performance.

Balance Tubes (or ‘H’ pipes) help to even out the pulses in the exhaust gases and balance the backpressure between both banks of your engine. They not only help improve horsepower, but sound as well.To find the right location to install your balance tube, apply a strip of paint down the front portion of the exhaust pipes. The balance tube should be placed where the paint burns off (bubbles) on the exhaust pipes. Generally, put the balance tubes as close to the headers as possible. The balance tube diameter should be at least 75% of the diameter of the pipes with which it connects.
